A backyard can be just as beautiful as a garden as long as you set out the masonry in a way that is appealing. It does not have to be difficult or take a long time to put together, but once completed, it will give you years of enjoyment with much less attention than flowers would need. With the right equipment and materials, you can have perfect surroundings for the next 20 years.
Health and safety
Part of this job will entail you moving heavy items around, so it will be a good idea to buy or borrow dollies. It could be cheaper to buy your own rather than rent, but whatever you do, your back will be pleased that you did. You can also find that you get blisters when you are working with stone. To limit this, you can use athletic tape. It will protect your fingers and not prevent you from working on the stone.
Keeping sand in place
When bricks are laid, the sand will be placed between them, and over time, some can be washed away. There is now a product that you can buy that will prevent this. Polymeric sand can be added to your own sand, or you can buy a ready-mixed version. When using this, you can keep both the cost of replacing sand and the time required to update the landscape down.
Cutting the masonry may seem easy, but there can be problems when the tools start to heat up. Cool the blades by spraying water on them. If you are using a saw, there is the need to ensure that the plug is grounded.
To make sure that patios are secure, it's important to use deep gravel bases. There should be up to 12" of base layer and it needs to be carefully compacted. Don't just pour it all in and then compact it, as it will not make a strong enough base. A couple of inches at a time should be put in and then compacted before the next couple of inches are added.
Masonry can affect drainage, and there will be problems if the soil becomes waterlogged. A block wall will benefit a great deal from having drainage installed as it will prevent it from bulging or become insecure. The tubing should be placed at the bottom of the wall and be sloped so that the water comes through to the top and can drain away.
